“In the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed” Charles Darwin
On my LinkedIn profile, I proclaim, that I am living at the confluence of retail, mobile, CRM and payments. I should add that so is every retailer in business today.
It is a confusing and noisy places, so what’s a retailer to do? Every place you turn you are being told that you must have this or that as it is the next best thing; while you worry about PCI, EMV, Nexus, Medical Insurance, Inventory, Taxes, how do you find time for customers?
Take a moment, and think about delegating some of these tasks. There is a large merchant ecosystem out there and it connects commerce with payments; it includes Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Dwolla, Google Product , Red Laser, Ebay Local to name a few. You don’t need to reinvent the process, these recognized partners have already connected it all for you. So where do you start!
Typically your payment provider is one of your most trusted partner, and they have been preparing for life in this new world for a while now. They no doubt have vetted many products to determine how they can meet your expanded payment needs. Get in touch with your payment provider, and ask them to talk to you about what tools they provide to increase your reach at the Point of Sale, how can payments be used to create a robust CRM, what kind of mPOS (stress that you are looking for one that also connects to your back office, most payment companies think of mPOS differently) solutions they have that allow for a higher level of interaction with consumers, what tools do they have that help you sell more at the Point of Purchase.
You hear all the time that retail is evolving and that retailers have to adapt. Contact your trusted provider; ask them if they have collaborated with other innovative solutions providers to provide you tools that not only conduct sales but help you engage today’s tech savvy consumers.
